How to clean, store and live with a 3D printed object — and what its layer lines and texture actually mean.
Keep it good
- Clean with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
- Keep PLA objects away from high heat, open flames and hot cars.
- Unless explicitly stated otherwise, products are not certified for food contact, medical, load-bearing or safety-critical use.
- Decorative vessels are not watertight unless specifically marked as such.
- Minor layer lines, texture and colour variations are normal characteristics of 3D printing.
- Products may contain small parts and are not suitable for children under 3 unless stated otherwise.
Why do 3D prints have layer lines?
Every 3D printed object is built one thin layer of material at a time, stacked from the bottom up. The faint horizontal texture you can see and feel — the "layer lines" — is the visible record of that process, not a flaw. How pronounced they are depends on the layer height used and the shape of the object: curved surfaces show them more than flat ones. We choose print settings that balance a clean finish with reasonable production time, and small variations in texture and sheen between two of the same object are normal and expected in small-batch 3D printing.
